In the news:
Wachovia reports a first quarter loss of $270 million, or 14 cents per share versus earnings estimates of a profit of 47 cents per share. This forced the bank to lower its dividend, raise $7 billion in capital and cut jobs. Wachovia says that the nation's housing slump is only half over, and might not hit bottom until the middle of 2009.
Blockbuster, the biggest movie-rental chain, made an unsolicited offer to buy Circuit City Stores, the second-largest U.S. electronics retailer, with a bid between $6 and $8 a share (up to $1.35 billion). Circuit City closed at $3.90 last week before the takeover bid. Sphere: Related Content
