Final GDP rose at an unrevised 4.9% annual rate July through September, versus 3.8% performance in the second quarter. The PCE price gauge excluding food and energy rose 2.0% July through September, above the previously reported 1.8% increase and above the second quarter's 1.4% climb.
Bear Stearns reported a quarterly loss and said it was taking a $1.9 billion writedown due to mortgage related losses. Last month, Bear Stearns warned that it expected to take a $1.2 billion writedown. The stock was up in pre-market trading on the news before dipping lower.
